Paul Zahra

CEO | Non-Executive Director | Advisor | Diversity Advocate

Paul Zahra is a highly respected CEO, Non-Executive Director, Board and Company Advisor, and one of Australia’s most influential advocates for diversity and inclusion. With over 40 years in the retail industry, he has held some of the sector’s most prominent leadership roles, including Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of David Jones Limited, and senior positions at Target Australia and Officeworks.

Paul is widely credited with leading the digital transformation of David Jones, one of the world’s oldest department stores. His leadership delivered market-leading momentum and financial stability during the most challenging retail conditions in 25 years, culminating in the company’s successful sale at a premium in 2014.

He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Retailers Association (ARA) — the country’s oldest, largest, and most diverse retail body. Under his leadership, the ARA has undergone a significant transformation, attracting some of the nation’s largest and best-known retail brands while maintaining a remarkable 95% retention rate among small and medium-sized business members. Representing a $400 billion sector and 1.3 million employees, the ARA continues to grow in stature and influence under Paul’s stewardship.

Beginning his career in a family-owned small business, Paul remains a strong advocate for SMEs, championing their contribution to innovation and diversity in the retail community. A passionate diversity leader, he has spearheaded numerous high-profile LGBTI initiatives and campaigns. He is the former Chair of PwC’s Diversity and Inclusion Board, former Chair of the Pinnacle Foundation, former Chair of the Australian Institute of Music, and currently serves as an Ambassador for the 30% Club Australia. His governance experience spans ASX-listed companies, private equity, start-ups, and not-for-profits across education, retail, and FMCG.

Paul is an alumnus of Stanford University (USA) and a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
